The legitimacy of Mahraganat music has been an ongoing debate since the genre first took off in 2010, and Egypt’s newly elected Head of the Musicians' Syndicate, Mostafa Kamel, just announced he’s bringing all Mahraganat artists’ licenses to a halt.

The popular genre faced hurdles with the previous Head of the Musicians' Syndicate, Hany Shaker, as well, with many artists banned from performing publicly. According to Kamel's announcement, a new set of guidelines issued by the syndicate will regulate the genre and issue licenses accordingly.
